3 Best Ways to Save on Food

There are many ways to save on food costs and as a former grocery store manager I reveal secrets here that are the 3 very best ways. Coupons are great and should not be ignored. However, they take a lot of time and organization. If you are willing to gain a bit of knowledge about the food business and really save on food put the following tips in your mind.

Save on Food by the Calendar

The number one best way to save on food is to observe your calendar before shopping. As a gardener I know to plant tomatoes in late April and I will be celebrating the best tomato sandwiches by July 4th. Being a grocer taught me the best way to save on food by season. Summer corn is cheap. Winter blueberries are expensive. Learn the seasons and save on food like crazy.

Fresh produce is not the only thing to watch on your calendar. The best way to save on turkey is to buy Thanksgiving week. Candy is cheap after Halloween. Fruit cakes are marked down after Christmas. You get the idea. A summer vacation is expensive because of peak demand. The opposite is true in the grocery business because demand creates competitive prices combined with seasonal surplus due to production.

Plan Ahead to Save on Food

Number two on the best way to save on food is partially an expansion of the first idea. I stock up on coffee before the summer because sales do not happen much then. Check the dates on product you buy to insure lasting freshness and buy in quantity while on sale or in season. Look at the ads before going to the store for the best planning.

Do not run out of non-perishable staples such as canned foods. These can usually be bought on sale if you plan ahead. Buying in bulk can be good or bad. A family with 10 kids may save on food by buying 10 bags of potato chips on sale but not if the kids raid the pantry and eat them all at once. Use good judgment to plan ahead for your needs.

Save on Food by Watching Signs

Best way number three to save on food requires being observant. If you have 10 kids leave them at home for maximum concentration. All grocery stores have wonderful opportunities to find bargains. In produce a “peak of the season” sign usually means low price. Clearance sections have a sign with closeout prices.

The best way to verify a sale from the ad is to see a dated sign on the shelf. Displays have sale prices on signs. Some displays have tricky signs that only look like a sale. I used to make signs just to create greater profits. Watch carefully and learn prices. Now that you know the best ways to save on food practice your skills. This knowledge can give you power to save a bunch of money.
