about the false and misleading reward program and the added expense you will have to pay to begin fishing

Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program

Wow nothing I have ever done has been more challenging than attempting to catch these crafty hard to fish for that survive in the Columbia river. I first saw this fish on a TV program on PBS Nature after watching every other episode and finally Salmon, Running the Gauntlet was the only episode I hadn't seen and is the beginning it was very informative and then it lead into the problem that was costing the hatcheries thousands of Frankenstein fish they reproduce artificially after the females are caught and their bellies cut open and her eggs extracted next a male is milked of his sperm and collected and added to the plastic bag of still unfertilized salmon eggs that in fact are a delicacy to the veracious pikeminnow that follow the salmon as they migrate up and down this vast river.

Misleading the Public

Continuing watch this program is arrives at the Bonneville dam where a friendly Fish and Game employee hold up there is a dead pikeminnow and begins to explain the reason why bounty of these fish, how they eat millions of newly released hatchery fish into the river where they have no idea about predators such as the pikeminnow and from the air seagulls or cormorants that swim under water and seize these fragile fingerlings, they are only the length of a person's finger at this point making an easy meal out of these expensively raised hatchery salmon or steelhead juvenile fish, it has become so bad their are special huge barges that shuttle these small fish all the way down river to the mouth of the Columbia and the Pacific ocean

Disquishing a Wild Salmon

There is a difference and it's the clipped rear fin on the back of the hatchery produce fish, each fish is painstakingly caught in the tanks and someone clips that tiny rear back fin that is maybe only less than an eighth of an inch long at this stage, what a pain that must be, as the fish grows if it lives that long that fin will never grow back making it an easy way for the angler and also the Fish and Game employees to tell the wild fish that must be released back into the river from the hatchery fish that anglers are allowed to keep but the must be accounted for after caught, if caught poaching a wild fish such as a steelhead which are referred to as high finners, meaning it still has its rear fin intacted and besides that I have observed that the wild fish just look better than their hatchery raised brothers, more often they are just bigger and healthier looking. Take notice the fish in the photo is a small steelhead and there is only one fin on it's back, the rear fin clipped years earlier.

PBS Nature

This show that is so misleading must of got a huge contribution to air this phony bit of information, during the program there are shots of anglers fishing from the river banks like its the easiest thing in the world but in reality if you don't have a sturdy boat and thousands of dollars of costly fishing gear you have absolutely no chance of catching these fish and make a profit, for one thing the price of your fishing license for out of stators will set you back 106$ that means you must catch 25 fish to pay for your license then all the gear you will need like hooks, sinkers that can get expensive the heavier they are and some anglers even use railroad ties or spikes since there are trains going by all day long on both sides on the river and these are tied to the fishing pole and used for cheap weights other wise the super swift current just washes them down river until then are snagged on the rocky bottom. So by now you are all ready in the hole, if you have a boat that makes a huge difference to enhance your chances but boat fuel is especially costly so you better catch plenty of fish to just break even.

Bait

Bait can be costly to and even lures that are also used such as tubes filled with three beads and a double hook on the end with a 1 once or 2 barrel weight above the tube, these are use in a jigging fashion, the angler cast this lure out and then jigs it up and down, the key is never touch the bottom because if you do your snagged and lose all your expensive tackle, it has happened to me over and over again. The pikeminnows also like worms and chicken liver which is really hard to keep on the hook, I use a needle and impale my bait on a treble hook making it harder for the fish to peck it off the hook, my hooks are so small the fish all most have to swallow the hook, extracting the hook is always messing and often bloody, it is a stinky slimy business to be sure. Using salmon eggs for bait are great but of course I have know idea where to get some, even the Indians haven't been catching many salmon even with the aid of gill net they have been coming up empty, so sad if you knew how many millions of fish used to fill this river. The conservation efforts have resulted in to little to late

Pikeminnow Register Procedures

Every day each angler must sign in and fill out a daily registration slip, name address, fishing license number and they go catch fish if possible. You can also find video of this on You-Tube just type in fishing for pikeminnows. It is fun but remember the same guys make all the money every year , the fish are hard to find if you are new to this area and most of these guys are professional fishermen, many from the Ukraine or Russia, like Nicolai, who is their top man, good luck if you are under the illusion that this is easy and you will clean up, forget it if you don't have boat and the bank fishing is dangerous but it is beautiful in this scenic area and there are lots of free camping places especially if you are fishing for pikeminnow, I practically lived in the parking lot of Fish and Game since the river is only twenty feet or so from the river's edge.
