If you are the philanthropic type, but are looking for something a little outside of the box from the bigger and more well known charities, you may want to consider the following causes!

There are several charities out there that focus specifically on child abuse. One in particular is Childhelp.

This is a charity that began in 1959, when two actresses found themselves on a Goodwill tour in Japan during the Korean War. When they arrived, a typhoon hit and people were told to take shelter. A few days later, they ventured out to find children huddled in the aftermath with no where to go.

With the overcrowding of the orphanages, and the government denied assistance due to these children being 1/2 American and 1/2 Japanese (most were children of service men), these young women were faced with a decision.

With the help of their Hollywood status, along with a local woman name Kin Horuchi (Mama Kim), they were able to raise donations and awareness for children that grew into the hundreds within the first three weeks.

Over the many years, this charity has grown and changed to incorporate a number of different missions. With locations all across the country, their main objective now focuses on helping victims of child abuse and neglect.

Canary Foundation

Cancer is a scary issue for everyone. It is terrifying if you know someone who has been diagnosed and it is more terrifying for someone being diagnosed. There are a lot of charities out there with similar goals in mind, including the Canary Foundation.

Founded in 2004, this charity is committed to research in early detection before cancer can occur. Their goal is to bring the world to a place where "Signs of cancer could be exposed before they technically became cancer".

With a team of scientists behind them working every day to pin point the beginning development of cancer cells, this charity has some very real potential.

Robin Hood Foundation

This foundation focuses on the 1.8 million people living in poverty in one of the richest cities in the world, New York. This is one of the few charities out there where 100% of donations go straight to funding their many programs.

Their programs are vast and diverse, ranging from super-storm Sandy Relief to teen pregnancy prevention and housing for the homeless and disabled. According to their site, 92% of those who enter the Robin Hood program never return to shelters.

American Kidney Fund

As referenced by the name, this is an advocacy group focused on raising awareness for those suffering from kidney failure. The donations they receive go toward providing financial assistance, health information and prevention tools to those in need.

Founded in 1971 and based out of Rockville Maryland, this association has been ranked as one of the top three in the nation in regards to the spending efficiency.

They also run a free help line that you can call if you or someone you love has been diagnosed with a kidney disease, or you have questions in general about kidney health.
