The cost of petrol makes driving an expensive thing to do but there are ways to get more miles for your money.

Get More Miles From Your Tank

With the cost of petrol rising on what seems like a daily basis, we are all looking for ways to get more for our money. Follow these few simple steps to help you get more miles from your tank.

1. Keep your vehicle well maintained. Make sure that the oil and water are within recommended levels and keep your tyres pumped to the right pressure. Get into the habit of checking these things once a month and it will soon become second nature to you.

2. Remove any excess weight from your vehicle that you can. If you’re not actually moving the pile of junk in your boot somewhere, leave it at home.

3. Anticipate what will happen on the road ahead. If you’re approaching a line of stationary traffic, don’t speed right up to it and then slam the brakes on. Slowing down and hopefully avoiding coming to a complete stop is much more fuel efficient.

4. Use your gears wisely. If possible, speed up as you approach a hill and, once you are on the incline, move into a lower gear before the engine starts to groan.

5. Try to avoid driving during the rush hour. The stop/start nature of the peak time driving in a city uses a lot of petrol and if possible, you would be better making the journey at a time that traffic can move more freely.

6. Don’t sit with the engine idling unnecessarily. If you are going to be still for more than 30 seconds, if it is safe to do so, turn the engine off.
