Little Did I Know That Buying A CD For £3.99 Would Cost Me Another £150!

I Felt Sick When I Rang My Bank

Two weeks before Christmas I ordered a Matt Cardle CD from Play.com. I did this via a link from the X-Factor website. Thinking about this now, I do not buy CDs and the like in this fashion, I normally go straight to the website in question, usually Amazon as I have never had any bother with them.

Whilst I was away over Christmas my husband rang me to tell me that my computer was defunct. He also told me that one of those dodgy Nigerian emails was sent to his machine from mine.

"Impossible!" I said. "My computer doesn't work anymore."

My husband then advised me to ring my bank. I did as he suggested and sure enough, instead of having £150 in there I had £15! I felt sick at that point because I knew I had been fleeced. To cut a long story short my emails have left a trail as I now have a new computer therefore I can access my email account. Whoever the hacker was he has bought a Playstation from - not Play.com because he could not verify his (my) details but a site called PlayTrade that supply stuff to Play.com.

My bank is sending me a form and I am confident that I can get this £150 reimbursed as I could not spend it because of the poor weather at the time, preventing me from going out, so I knew someone else has been spending my Christmas money instead. Scumbag!

I am writing this to alert others to the dangers of accessing sites from others that millions of people use, such as the X-Factor website. Needless to say, I have learned my lesson but am hopeful that I won't hesitate in buying anything else online in future. From now on I will stick with Amazon for CDs! I have cancelled my debit card too as a precaution.

Currently I am unemployed so I have a lot of time on my hands. However, I feel I need to be on the internet, communicating with others, giving advice, making people laugh and, hopefully become well-respected on wikinut.

I've since got my money back so the form RBS is sending me will verify the fact that it was Play.com that was hacked online. I've received a new debit card as well. My experience has not put me off buying things online; in fact I did so earlier, but not Play.com, my account has been cancelled with them! Happy New Year to you too my friend. :-)

I'm glad you got your money back. Always scan your computer for viruses before logging onto financial sites, and make sure your passwords are at least 13 characters long - they will then be harder to crack.
