When an internet dream doesn't happen and earning dry up

Internet dream

Internet dream

Over the years, too many to count I’ve often thought of making money online. Truth be said I have earned some money online, but it’s only ever been extra cash. It’s been nice to receive the extra money, often using it for birthdays and Christmas.

From 2010 until the end of last year I earned a fair amount, however since then this year so far not been good with my earnings online almost next to nothing. I guess in many ways that’s the way the internet goes, websites come and go. You have to take the good times with the bad.

I’m hoping that it will turn around and my earnings online start to pick up. I’ve always had the dream of making enough money online to make a living from it. I know many people do and in real teams I should be.

How do I earn online?

I have my own website selling my photography work. I’ve had the website about 3 years now and it’s gone through many changes over that time. I’m happy with the way it now looks and feels, which is important.

I have an Etsy store which I opened last September. Etsy is a place where you can sell you handmade products like knitwear and jewellery. I can knit and have done so for a long time, started to knit when I was 7. I have over 100 products in my store, winter and summer items.

I’m on a few writing websites, like Wikinut although I don’t write much these days, but I do miss writing. I really must sit down and write more. I keep saying I should do much but all to often I get side tracked in doing other things.

I do a few PTC websites, where you view Ad’s and paid for viewing, it’s slow but at least it pays. I’ve been doing one PTC website now for about 4 years now.

All in all I should earning more than I currently do. Maybe it's a current trend happening and within a few months it will all change.

Have you seen your internet dream disappear, your earnings dry up? What do you do to earn online? Do you just earn pennies or enough to live on?

The only way I have found to make anything appreciable from online writing is to write to order, on sites such as Hirewriters - you select a project, write the piece that is required, and collect a few dollars if you meet the deadline and the requirements.

In the past I made a few bob by correcting the English of student work written by overseas students. However, you are always working to someone else's deadline and it can become a real burden on your time. I never found any shortage of clients, though!

Yes, I also enjoy writing. Although it does seem harder at the moment to make money online, like you say. But I will keep writing.

I have been paid only by Wikinut and it does not amount to much though I understand some get paid almost every month - GBP 2.50 +. I know of sites that pay more but others, who paid much higher, turned out to be a flash in the pan! siva

HubPages is a site that has been going for some time and which does pay its members honestly. I have recently resumed my acquaintance with it and am now earning a few pennies form pieces that have been there for about seven years!

Thank you John, I know about Hubpages and I must take another look at it again.

Thank you Sivaramakrishnan, I think I know the website you mean.

Thank you CoffeeQueen we just have to keep writing even though it's now much harder to earn and hope things open up again in the future.

Since the end of last year, it seems like many have lost that dreams. I was making good money writing online and than it seemed like everything went downhill. Many sites are not paying anymore or they reduced their payments greatly. It has made me think of new things to do to make money online.

It is a sad reflection of the state of affairs that you can make more money on "paid to click" sites than you can on writing sites.
