Is Blogging A Good Way to Make Money?

Can a person make good money by having their own blog? How much money can you make per month by blogging? Is having a blog a good idea for making money online?

Why I Started a Blog

I was working a regular job but it was a low wage and part time, I needed to make more money. I learned about online opportunities. When I starting writing on the web it was on a paid per view site known as Triond. I worked hard and made a few dollars, but was hearing that there was more money to be made if a person started their own blog. As such I got a free blog on Google's Blogspot website and went to work. I used Google Adsense as my main way to make money.

As my knowledge is mostly in the areas of pet care I started with a pet related blog I called "The Animal Cabin".

How Much Money Did I Make Blogging

I waited for the dollars to roll in.

Nothing happened. I realized that the internet is very saturated with pet blogs so I became somewhat more specific to exotic pets (everything other than cats, dogs, and fish) and also started up a sheep/farm blog too, featuring pictures of every new lamb as it was born. I thought for sure lots of people would just love a site that featured new pictures of baby lambs almost daily.

Again, not much happened.

The dollars did not roll in, but the pennies did.

I started two more blogs, one about human overpopulation, and another that was more of a rant against bad pet owners. Then I added another that was a cute idea, written as an advice column to pets.

The first two blogs have been the best as far as earnings go, perhaps because I have done more on them and established them sooner.

Adding up all those blogs I think the most I ever made in a week was a dollar, typically it was just a few pennies per week.

What Else

I eventually got set up with Commission Junction, a site that allowed me to post specific ads in my blog and if somebody bought something I would earn. This was good in that I could potentially make more money, but I was not paid for views on the ads, or ad clicks, only sales -- and I have had none. Oh well.

I have been told that free blog sites tend not to do as well as when you pay for your own site, but I cannot afford that, so I will keep my Blogger blogs for now, and let the pennies continue to come!

Blogging is not always a good get rich quick possibility, but it can be fun.

Good afternoon, BNelson, thanks for the personal side of blogging. I think people assume there is going to be more monies generated from them than is realistic. I appreciate your candor in this and maybe it will reinforce some things for others. Good luck with all the sites and I like that idea of writing to the pets. ~Marilyn

I appreciate your more experienced perspective, since I'm just beginning to take blogging seriously. I just joined Wikinut today, hoping to see how it compares if I put as much into it as I do into my blogs.

I have come to the conclusion I'm not good at affiliate sales. I'm making my second attempt to use Commission Junction. I'm also trying to use VigLink on some blogs. I just started both of these, so we'll see how it goes. I expect I'll probably still do better with Zazzle.

Generally speaking I wouldn't recommend anyone start a blog with the intention of making money - although with well produced ones this can be a good by-product.
