Whenever people consider making extra money from recycling, they automatically think of pop cans, but did you know you can make money recycling paper as well? Read on to find out how!

Making Money With Paper Recycling

I’m always looking for ways to make a little money on the side. One of those streams of revenue is through recycling! Recycling, of course, has its environmental benefits, but in my town, people seem to be oblivious to the fact that there are recycling centers who pay out for practically 90% of your trash! I’m on track to making roughly $1000 this year off of recycling. I typically go to the recyclers three times a week and take about 250-300 lbs. of paper each time, but I usually don’t spend more than 20 minutes for each trip. So that’s maybe two hours a week with hauling and collecting? Not bad!

Paper is the most overlooked recyclable I’ve found out there. People will gladly take a pound or two of aluminum to the recyclers and get maybe 40 cents. They see paper as a waste because it only fetches a penny or two a pound, but they don’t realize how much paper is available for the taking! I take it from my jobs (I work at two libraries) as well as from my home and from some local businesses, and you’d be really surprised how much paper waste businesses throw out each week. People gladly give it to me. Not only is it more convenient for them but it also saves them money on their garbage bill. Double bonus! So, get out there and ask for people’s garbage, it may pay off in the end!

Hi, I don't understand how you can make a profit of $2000/year, can you explain? Using your example - 300 lb per trip* 2 cents per pound = $6 gross income per trip. At the low end of your scale, 1 cent per pound and 200 pounds per trip, you are making $2. I can't figure out how your can even break even with the time involved and gas expenses.

Debbie, I did write that incorrectly. It should be roughly $1000 per year.$6 per trip 8 * 3 days per week. $18 a week comes to a little under $1000 per year. So sorry for that oversight!
