I hope that this page will encourage public awareness of not getting stung in these tough times and make their money go a little further in the process.

The Trap Of The Supermarket

The supermarkets will pretend that they are on your side, they are not. They will pretend they are truly benefiting your purse strings. They are not. They will lure you with two for price of one and reward points. There will be shelf tags and glitzy stands, a trap in every section, but if you go prepared for this and determined to do it your way, you will get to have the last laugh.

Before You Even Leave Home

Write the shopping list, keep menus in mind, any dietary issues and hopefully when the children are in bed. If they take it in turns to choose food, let them tell you and start the list of with those items, so you do not forget.

Try to go without the children to save tears, tantrums and embarrassment. Stick to the list and only buy a bargain if it really pays you to have it. Keep all this in mind and above all, go on a full stomach, so hunger does not dictate your purse strings.

Arrival At The Supermarket

Follow your list to the letter. Watch out for special offers with prices and calculate whether it is genuine. Sometimes it is an illusion. Consider own or basic brands, cheaper and usually nearly as good. I have saved a lot of money by doing this alone.

Never pick an item up just for "Reward Points" and weigh loose items, to ensure you do not put too much in your trolley. Check carefully for things that you want. Cotton Buds for instance in the baby section very expensive. However, in my local supermarket, I went to the cosmetic section and found a similar product, better than half the price of its neighbor. Remember, they are not on your side.

Watch the meat counter carefully. Compare choice of cuts and price, if money tight, consider chicken. Its versatile and easy to vary use, from roasts to curries, let your imagination run, just stick to your budget. Fish can be a cheap alternative, Coley for instance is cheaper than Cod, tastes very similar and cooks just the same.

If Supermarkets Still Worry You

Consider shopping online, going to markets and mobile vans. I have found a lot of cheap meat, fish and vegetables, but still good enough to stock the fridge and cupboards.

Make Those Savings Count

Try to put the money that you save by being savvy and putting it away. This may help with paying for a holiday, or improving your home. It may be a rainy day fund or emergency money. When you see those savings adding up, it will spur you on and less stress will improve health and family fun.
