Are there benefits to having a month-to-month cell phone plan, or is a contract the better way to go? This short piece explores some of the aspects of this dilemma.

The Dilemma

This is a tricky question. Month to month billing versus a contract or timed plan spread across a given number of months or years has both pros and cons depending on the kind of phone service you have, who your telecom company is, and the features you are after.

Month to Month

Generally-speaking, choosing month-to-month works best in those scenarios where you are between contracts. This is a period of time where you are in limbo, deciding on your next timed plan. Not all companies will lock you into a 3yr plan anymore. It is possible to obtain all the benefits of a contract with as little as a 12-month plan.

A Contract

A 1 year or 2 year plan will give you access to your next phone, often for free. It will give you access to services that you just don't get when you are going month to month. Reliable ongoing service, tech support and customer service support cannot be overstated. Consistency with your telecom provider ensures that you get the best products, the best services, and the best support for the duration of your contract. Depending on your telecom provider, there may even be perks, bonuses, rebates and kickbacks that turn your monthly buddies green with envy.

Time to Compare

To find out how a contract compares against your current month-to-month scenario, contact your telecom provider. Ask them for details, pricing and benefits that you will receive if you choose a single one-year term over your current status. You'll be surprised at the savings! So give them a call, drop them an email, or stop by their website to learn more. Your wallet will thank you. Your phone service will thank you, and your peace of mind will thank you!
