The Truth About Being Poor

There are many misconceptions about poor people today. I hope, to clean up some of the most popular misconceptions about poor people. Most people do not choose to be poor.

Introduction

At this point in time, the economy is still not as good as many people think it is. I know, far too many people with college degrees who are working in gas stations and fast food just to put food on the table for their families. There are many misconceptions out there for good jobs today. It is also hard to look for a better job when you are working.

The prices of everything seem to be going up almost on a daily basis. I know many people, who do many little extra things to make money.

Poor People are Lazy

Poor people are lazy! Yes, some people are lazy but laziness comes in all form from the rich to the poor.
Poor people being lazy is a huge misconception that some people have about poor people. There is a thing called the working poor these days. People who work a job or two may still be considered poor because, they make below the poverty level.

Poor People Waste Money

Most people I know, who do not have much money know, how to stretch what little they do have. The problem comes when unexpected things pop up. When the car breaks down, and you have to have it to get to work. Car repairs can be a huge expense. A car breaking down is just one example. I could list hundreds of them.

Poor People are Poor Because They Choice to be!

Most poor people were born poor. They do not have the money to go to college or better themselves with schooling. Most poor people do not have a choice to be that way. They work very hard to make their lives better.

The biggest thing about being poor is circumstances. Some people did have good paying jobs at one time but lost them because of cutbacks in the companies. The next time, you see a poor person do not judge them because they are poor. You could lose your job in the blink of an eye and end up in their place.

This is an interesting article. I earn today less than one percent of the largest salary I ever earned.

Peter, many people today earn much less than they did five or ten years ago. This is a sad truth of today. Many people are not living as well as their parents did.

To be clear I am not mad about this situation, but I also feel it wrong to criticise people because of the situation they are in, especially when things result from unforeseen circumstances.

You make some good points. Many people who are poor actually work a darned sight harder than many who are rich.

If you earn at a low hourly rate you may feel constrained to work all the hours you can in order to end up with enough to live on.

John, thank-you. Many poor people do tend to work longer hours.

This is a great article, Brendamarie! Thanks for sharing! It is sad that many people with college degrees are working at entry-level jobs or can't find work at all.

What is particularly disconcerting is the effort made by right wingers through their media outlets like Fox News to convince us that poor people are lazy and it's their own fault they are poor. Sadly, many accept this kind of propaganda as truth. We have only to look at the posts of Wikinut writer LeRain to see how pervasive is this belief.

Nice post brendamarie. Thank you.

I do remember a song by Diana Ross that states "You could be walking their shoes." in her song "Reach Out And Touch".

The rich should be grateful to the poor as the latter are not greedy; they are contented with what they have. A poor person is more willing to let go $10 than the rich!

Realistic take, thanks Brendamarie - siva

Those fortune enough to be born into a rich family or someone who get all the breaks and end up with a well paying job are always the first to accuse the poor of being lazy. There are always a few of course, who are the exception to the rule but they are few. Life here of course is short and death treats us all alike. The dead homeless person is equal to the richest person in the country. I much prefer the company of a person who has to sacrifice to made ends meet. Blessings.

Great post ~ Brendamarie. Thanks for sharing.

I think poor people often may need help and direction in doing things in a way that is not self-destructive or counter-productive.

Of course that would be true of the middle class as well ~ many of whom may have been born into poverty ~ moved into the middle class ~ but because of downsizing, catastrophic illness, divorce or death etc. are now poor again even homeless in some cases.

Richest Blessings to you.

I really liked this article I think its the first one I've read about poor people that is actually telling from there side of the story. My father grew up poor and in the projects sometimes he would talk about his childhood and it seemed hard to believe that people can have nothing, literally. Luckily he was able to better himself. Also, I would like to add that some homeless people are homeless because they have an untreated mental illness or were veterans that cant get help.
Everyone has a story and I often wish people would take the time to listen from people that may not be middle to upper class.
Thanks for your article
Cheers

poor people depends on how poor they are. If they are poor that they can't afford to eat a decent meal a day, how can they have money to buy a car? Lazy people should be the ones
